TÜRKİYE HAS GIVEN THE FIRST SUPPORT IN THE FRAME OF T.E.D.A PROJECT.
Türkiye realised T.E.D.A. Project, known as The Translation Support Programme, which was worked over a year by the general directorate of libraries and publications of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It is mainly targeted to take place abroad culturally through the Translation Support Programmes that have been fulfilled by the major developed countries since the beginning of the previous century.
By realising T.E.D.A.Project , Turkish culture, art and literature are targeted to be known abroad by the readers widely through the pre-eminent samples of them. In order to introduce the comprehension of Turkish literature worldwide, legal entities such as international institutions, establishments, companies, foundations and associations publishing the literary works relating to Turkish culture, art and literature have been supported in accordance with their projects.. To achieve this , the Ministry of Culture and Tourism allocated an appropriation of TL 330 Billion for the first year by opening a new chapter in a budget on T.E.D.A. project after having co-ordination with the ministry of finance and the state planning organisation in 2005.
The main features of this project is to have Turkish culture, art and literature become more acquainted in the international scenes ,where they have not been able to be put into realization in a satisfactory level up until now , by bringing the respected and celebrated publishing companies into action abroad. Another characteristic of this project depends on translating the classical and the contemporary samples of turkish culture ,which will play a prominent role in being known internationally, into the most spoken languages and publishing them abroad.
30 applications ,which predominantly have come from the United States together with the European countries, have been received until 31 st of May 2005 pertaining to T.E.D.A. Project since March 2005 when the project has been publicised and announced to international publishers. Afore-mentioned applications have been evaluated in the first gathering held on Thursday, 23.06.2005 in which the T.E.D.A. counsel and evaluation board consisted of Prof.Dr.Mustafa İSEN - the undersecretary of Ministry of Culture and Tourism- , Mustafa PAŞALIOĞLU – the deputy general manager of libraries and publications- , Prof.Dr.Talat Sait HALMAN, Prof.Dr.İlber ORTAYLI, Prof.Dr.Saliha PAKER, Prof.Dr.İhsan SEZAL and Mr.Doğan HIZLAN - journalist and author-.
A large number of the applications received on this project constitude both the classical and the contemporary samples of Turkish literature together with the studies concerning the history of our literature.
20 applications have been found worthy to support by taking them into consideration in terms of the quality of translations and the publishers in the board of counsel and evaluation consisting of five leading names of Turkish literature and academic society.
Unreturned subsidy shall be granted to the publishers for the expenses of translation , printing and promotion campaigns on condition that the literary work is published within two years.
The primary objective of this project - the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has no specific list relating to publishers or authors-literary works - is to encourage the relevant publishers to translate the qualified literary books into other languages and publish them abroad by providing subsidies.
In order for Turkish Literature to take part preeminently abroad; being one of the major legs of the studies in the frame of T.E.D.A.Project, an international book fairs ,which mostly consist of copyright licenced books, should be constituted accordingly. In this context, the general directorate of libraries and publications exercises incentive studies to make the private publishers participate into the fairs. Our Ministry, which made a planning of participation for the copyright licencing agencies for the first time last year, will participate in the book fairs of Tokyo, Moscow and Frankfurt in 2005 with the widespread files that are attractive for international publishers.
